Missing Pets & Animals in Need of New Homes

Missing and Stray Animals

The City of Sydney houses stray animals that have been found by residents and Rangers with the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter. The shelter has one of the lowest euthanasia rates in NSW and is committed to finding homes for all suitable animals in its care. The shelter operates under a 'No-kill' policy, whereby only those dogs or cats assessed to be either a danger or having an illness that would affect their quality of life are euthanased. Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter enjoys a reputation for its staff’s dedication to and compassionate care for the animals during their stay at the facility. The shelter also boasts a team of 25 volunteers who spend time with the animals on a daily roster basis to ensure they well exercised, well socialised and able to enjoy the very important human/animal bond.

When the City of Sydney picks up a stray animal with a microchip and/or other identification such as a collar and tag, every effort is made to return the animal to its owner prior to impoundment. If this cannot be achieved the animal will be transported to the shelter at 8 Production Road, Taren Point.
When animal’s arrive at the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter they will be scanned for a microchip by staff and, if a microchip is found and there are correct details available on the NSW Companion Animals Register, staff will attempt to contact the owner by phone and a registered letter detailing the impound is also sent to the identified owner.

Upon contact the identified owner will be advised that their animal has been impounded and they will be provided with the details of what they need to do in order to have their animal released.

If the owner cannot be contacted by phone a registered letter will be sent to the animal’s home address as listed on the NSW Companion Animals Register advising that the animal has been impounded. Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998, dogs and cats without a microchip must be held for 7 days and those with a microchip are held for fourteen days prior to being put up for adoption.

If your microchipped pet is missing please contact the City on 02 9265 9333 to verify your contact details on the NSW Companion Animals Register are correct. In the event that your missing animal is not microchipped you should contact the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter on 02 9710 0401. All animals available for adoption will be microchipped, registered and desexed prior to going to their new homes.
